Scott's : PFIX

Here's a shot that I took while ago of Scott's latest PFIX. He's running the production MED frame, fork, front wheel & tire for those who are curious. We've been helping Specialized test & design this complete bike for more than a year now. It's been through a lot, but I think we've finally found what we were looking for. A bike that is as practical as it is revolutionary.

PFIX : Barspin Clearance

People have been asking what the barspin clearance is like on the PFIX. Here's a couple shots of the clearance on the Medium frame w/ 175mm cranks & 26x2.2 tires. All of us are running 175's even Scott, & Jeff who are on the Small frames. I strongly recommend anybody riding a bike w/ neg BB to run 175's. It'll give you more torque, power & pop.

Scott : Hemisphere

Here's a close up shot of Scott checking out this huge ledge leading down into the creek before he threw himself on it. Scott's always ranting about how the Specialized Hemisphere (as shown above) is his favorite tire. I think the newer Hemi tread pattern is looks better, but Scott swears by the OG Hemisphere.

PFIX : Red Ano Components

The production model will have anodized red components on a matte black frame. Here's my current set up. New and improved 10t rear hub w/ a laser etched PFIX logo. Equal flange heights with 6 holes drilled out on the opposite side of the drive side. I'm running the a FBM hub guard in the back that is the exact height of the hub flange. It fits perfectly on the bike and was easy enough to install just had to cut my cone bolt in half.

PFIX : Integrated Chain Tensioner

Here's some detail shots of the production MEDIUM. Integrated chain tensioners that keep your drive train tight, and prevent slap on the chain stay. Helps keep the bike running smooth and keeps your rear wheel from shifting around on you on grinds and rough landings. Easy to work with & definitely one of my favorite features on the bike.

New Head Tubes

Here's the latest and most likely the production version of the MED Specialized PFIX. The SML & MED frames will have the head tube show above, while the LRG frame will have a slightly larger one. The S cut out is a nice finishing touch that gives the owner the option to personalize their bike by spray painting, sticker bombing, or drawing on their steerer tube. This puts us one step closer to getting this bike out there. What would you slap on your steerer?

PFIX : MED V2 Build

Here is the latest V2 PFIX Prototype build. This bike definitely looks hard all murdered out black with red anodized components. This is probably as close of a look as it gets, to what the production models will look like, with a few minor changes. Aside from that this bike is pretty close to completion. here's a quick look at the first generation PFIX straps.
  • Medium Frame
  • -2 BB Drop
  • 175 cranks
  • 25x10 gearing
  • 417.5 AC Fork
  • 29" 1 Piece Bars
  • Dual 26's w/ 2.2's
  • Female Front Hub

PFIX : Female Front Hubs

Here's a look @ the new female front hub that'll be rocking on the PFIX upon its release. Female hubs are definitely a step in the right direction, and eliminate the need to run 14mm axles to prevent bent and broken axles. The hub doesn't use axels, instead it uses 2 3/8 forged alloy bolts that thread into the hub body locking the wheel to the fork. They're more lightweight and you don't need to go out and get a new fork with 14mm drops to run it.

PFIX : Fresh Rubbers

Hot out the oven we got some new prototype tires, called the Compound. The tire above is a 26x2.2 and will also be offered in 2.0 as well for those who don't have as great of clearance, or just want to run something with less rolling resistance. With lower profile knobs and an improved street tread I can't wait to get on these.

Mobile Upload : V2 Frame & Fork

Scott posted a picture of his new size small V2 Frame, with the new 417.5 AC Fork on it. I love the tapered top tube, slightly bent seat tube and the overall beefy tubing on this bike. The front hub is the new female version, for those of you who don't know what that means follow the link. I'll have more pictures with full bike checks and specs up in the next couple weeks.  Keep it locked.

John's V2 PFIX Prototype

Here is a killer shot of John Nguyen's V2 PFIX Prototype, that I pulled off his FB. He's currently running the medium frame, 23x9 gearing, 2.3 tires, 175 cranks, and a 430AC fork. This on top of his custom orange paint job and pearly white spokes makes this one of the more flashy builds so far.

V2 Revisions : Rear Triangle

Here is a shot of the rear triangle on the V2 Prototype. Look at those sexy hydro formed chain stays. We curved the gusset in between the chain stays to give you better clearance with a fully slammed rear wheel. This is the only gusset used on the bike. We chose to use beefy tubing instead of throwing gussets all over the place. The photo above is of a 26 x 2.3 almost fully slammed in the drop out. Got quite a bit of room to play with even with the 2.3.

V2 Revisions : Barspin Clearance

Here is a shot of the barspin clearance on the large V2 Prototype w/ 26 x 2.3's, 172.5 cranks, and a 405 AC fork. Still trying to get used to the fact that I don't have to worry about hitting my toe ever again. Made the top tube on the bike a touch longer, and played with the head tube angle. The production fork is going to be somewhere between 417 and 420 AC, making the toe clearance even better than what it already is. I'll make an update with a photo showing the clearance on the medium sized frame with 175's.

The Man Behind The Bike

Al Boneta is our go to guy over @ Specialized, and he is the man behind it all. He's the one in charge the development of the WT PFIX Bike. This whole project has been his baby for more than 6 months now. None of this would have ever happened without Al being there to back the bike and push it into production. The guy grew up working bike shops, and riding BMX as a kid. He understands the lifestyle, because he was a part of it, and isn't just another schmuck in a suit. The man has poured his blood, sweat, and tears into this bike, and I don't know where this project would be without him.

PFIX : Chainring

Fresh from the farm, hot from the oven here are a couple shots of the P-Fix Chainring in action. The anodized Blue is JeffyD's, and the anodized Red is Gonzo's. I want to incorporate a bash guard onto this somehow. Food for thought.

Sticker Bombed Sunday

We've already made a bunch of Wheel Talk decals for us(as shown in the WT bike dog pile above), the next batch we make is going to be for you. We'll be handing em' out and selling em' off the blog for those who are interested. Got a ton of great photos these past couple days a bunch of which were just of our bikes. Enjoy.

PFIX : Chainring

We just got in the new P-Fix chainrings the other day, and damn those anodized colors look fresh. We got them in Gold, Purple, Red, Blue, Slime Green, and Gun Metal Grey. The chainring is 48 splined, and as of now we have them in 23t and 25t. Be on the lookout for even more new parts for the P-Fix / Wheel Talk bike.

The Specialized + Wheel Talk Introduction

Here is the Introduction to the new Specialized + Wheel Talk frame, and hub. We filmed this over at the Wheel Talk Compound in just a few hours with Al Boneta, the Bike Developer in charge of the project. We'll be putting out an edit of us laying down some lines at the park in the next couple weeks. Keep it posted.

Game Changer : 9T Cogs & 14mm Axle Hubs

It's not often that a company develops a product that completely revolutionizes the industry as well as the sport as we know it. For the past few months Specialized has been working on developing a hub that runs  a 9T Cog with 14mm axles, both of which are major game changes to Fixed Gear Freestyle.

Having 14mm axles over 3/8 gives you a setup that is virtually unbendable. Say goodbye to broken axles. These things are so strong that you don't even need solid axles to run pegs. The hollow axle reduces weight, while maintaing strength and structural integrity.

The 9T cog lets you run that 25 tooth chainring you've always wanted, without making your bike a spinny mess. I'm currently running a 23T chainring with a 9T cog in rear, giving me well over 70 gear inches. The cog isn't threaded on, and doesn't use a lockring, instead it uses 6 mini bolts that connect the cog to the hub. The beautiful thing about running their bolt on system, is that if you take all the bolts out the cog  is free from the hub, turning it back into a freewheel.

These are just a few of the ways that Specialized is bringing something new to the table. Be on the look out for a video gear guide explaining the hub and frame within the next couple of days .
